The most obvious alternative is a 50/50 creative/critical division, but it should be borne in mind that the creative component has to achieve a 'fully-realised work of literature', (which means students embarking on a 50/50 Ph D are usually short story writers or poets and not novelists).

In such cases, a student would normally have two supervisors ('joint supervision') – one drawn from English studies and one from Creative Writing.

Students wishing to pursue a project that uses interview as a research methodology or incorporates community arts projects, collaborative or spontaneous work (such as verbatim theatre or site specific arts development) or work with 'live participants' should discuss their work with a prospective supervisor prior to application and should develop a proposal which acknowledges the University’s code of practice for ethical research.

Cake publishes poetry, flash fiction and reviews with work from established poets and newcomers alike.

Our Linguistics and English Language department is one of the largest in the UK.

You could be analysing sound patterns or learning more about the tones, nuances and registers of the English language.

You will be taught to write in a range of forms and learn what kind of writer you wish to become.

You will have the chance to have your writing published in the Departmental magazine, CAKE and to participate in the Festival of Writing in the summer term.

Focused on both literary study and creative writing, our teaching is informed by award-winning writing and outstanding scholarship.

Our staff includes three Distinguished Visiting Professors representing this critical-creative identity: Terry Eagleton, a world-famous literary critic, and Paul Muldoon, one of the greatest living poets and Benoit Peeters, who is the UK's first Professor of Graphic Fiction and Comic Art.
