It’s been ten years since I’ve last written a “theological research paper.” In other words, a bit of rust has accumulated. My brain matter has grown a bit soft and my resources a bit old.
You are not describing something, but arguing a position.
I cannot remember how many times I tried to explain that central distinction to my High School English students. But the difference between an argumentative paper and a descriptive paper is significant.
Research must be driven by a desire to learn, and from this desire must be grounded in clear rules and guide rails by which the writer will remain for the trek.
Quote to take away: “To know God, we must know Christ, to know Christ we must imitate him, and to imitate Christ we must become like him in his death and resurrection.” (Kibbe, 28)We must enter theological research to serve the Church.4/5.
After a brief conclusion, Kibbe includes a series of appendices on things students should never do when writing research papers, theological research and writing tools, scholarly resources for theological research, navigating ATLA, using Zotero, and a suggested timeline for research papers.
This book is a helpful tool for anyone pursuing research at the doctoral or masters level. As a matter of fact theology was considered the most scholastic subject in ancient times. Now however, with the progress of science, theological research isn’t held in the same light anymore.Remember: “Your thesis is the heart of and soul of your paper. My brain matter has grown a bit soft and my resources a bit old.As I attempt to shake off the dust for possible doctoral work I want to acquire a refresh and also get caught up to date on the latest research methodologies. Kibbe places the Thesis at the forefront of all theological research.Second, this book is so short that it is a gem to read. Settled my nerves about my foray into graduate religion studies...It has been far too long since I have had to write an “academic” paper, and certainly not one for the humanities! Kibbe’s work provides a good step-by-step framework for getting organized around a topic, doing your research, and assembling what you need to make a coherent thesis and defend it.
